In addition to these wines, our holiday show featured Adrienne Stillman’s Apple Toddies. She explained that this terrific holiday cocktail was first mentioned in print in 1792 and was extremely popular in New York throughout the 1800s. Try the recipe yourself:

  • Adrienne Stillman with Apple Toddies2 oz Apple Brandy (Applejack or Calvados. Can substitute Bourbon or aged Brandy.), 1/2 baked apple, 1 tbs Demerara Sugar, boiling water
  • Baked Apple: peel, core and cut in half one apple. Wrap in wet brown paper to ensure the apple doesn’t fall apart in the oven. Bake for 30-45 minutes at 350 degrees, until completely soft.
  • Cocktail: Add the sugar and 1-2 oz boiling water to a mug. Stir to dissolve sugar. Add half the baked apple and brandy and stir to break up the apple. Top with boiling water and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

Here’s co-host Cyndee Nelson’s wine news report (as we were unable to establish a good connection remotely across the airwaves during the show):

WINE NEWS REPORT

The Wine Analytics Report is a new monthly digital publication including data, analysis and news for executives, winemakers, winery owners and anyone wanting to closely follow the trends in U.S. wine industry. The first issue reveals that the total U.S. wine market has grown to be worth $70.5 billion. That’s 408 million cases of wine!

The Sonoma Index Tribune is reporting that the city of Sonoma, in an effort to keep commercial rents in check and maintain a balance of businesses, is limiting the number of tasting rooms allowed in the town center. Since 2012, the number of tasting rooms around the Plaza has increased from 17 to 26 – an uptick of 35 percent. Meanwhile, commercial lease rates on the Plaza have grown from $2 per square foot to $6 per square foot.

The U.S. House has passed legislation that would allow North Coast grape growers to tap into emergency funding to compensate them for losses incurred because of smoke taint in 2018. Growers in Lake and Mendocino counties had their grapes rejected by wineries during last year’s harvest because of smoke damage to their crop from the Mendocino Complex fires in the summer.

If you’d like to earn your Certificate in Wine Entrepreneurship from Sonoma State University, now is the time. The program is available only on a biennial basis, and is designed to provide wine business principals and aspiring owners with the time and guided focus to create a business plan that ensures success. The eight-week program is led by Dr. Anisya Fritz, owner of Lynmar Estate Winery. It’s open to the public and runs from February 21 through April 11.

And finally….

According to a new and preliminary study by Harvard Medical School, drinking wine before bed has the potential to help you lose weight!

The study focused on the appetite-suppressing chemical which is found in most wines on the market. Resveratrol comes from plants and helps them to bounce back from being damaged, but in dietary terms, is known for combating your body’s fat cells while minimizing your desire to eat.

The 13-yearlong study found that women who drink two glasses of wine daily, including one at a later hour, were 70 per cent more likely to experience weight loss than those who didn’t consume wine. Of course, all things in moderation is the key!
